Dear Herr Tank
Thank you for your enquiry. TE199 is the aircraft serial number. We have no photographs of this Spitfire, but Morgan and Shacklady's book "Spitfire - the history“ mentions that when it was allocated in 1948 to the 21 Group Communications Flight for use by the Air Officer Commanding 21 Group it was painted glossy black with gold trim.
TE199 entered RAF service in April 1945, spending a brief period in store before being issued to No. 412 Squadron, who soon passed it on to 402 Squadron. By August 1945 the aircraft was back in store. In July 1946 the Spitfire was allocated to the RAF Staff College at White Waltham, where it was used by staff and students at the college to keep in flying practice. In October 1946 the TE199 was allocated to 21 Group Communications Flight, as mentioned above. At the end of 1948 the Spitfire was sent to RAF Kirkham to be used as a ground instructional aircraft, and it was Struck Off Charge in March 1955.
Bouchier was AOC 21 Group from July 1948 to July 1949, but only two or three pages of his memoirs cover this period and the Spitfire is not mentioned. Why was TE199 painted in a special scheme? Probably because the AOC wanted it so! It was not unusual for senior officers who had been allocated a personal aircraft to have it painted specially.
I'm sorry I can't be more helpful.
Yours sincerely

Pride of place with 21 Group`s Communications Flight was the AOC personal Spitfire XVI TE199. Illustrated in September 1948, its flying days were soon to be done - it was downgraded to an instructional airframe 6603M that December.
