Poland's national carrier LOT on Wednesday chose planes produced by the U.S. Boeing Co. over Europe's Airbus to renew its trans-Atlantic fleet, a company spokesman said.
Instead of the Airbus A350, LOT will lease seven of Boeing's new 787 Dreamliner aircraft, which is to go into service in 2008, with an option for another five, said company spokesman Leszek Chorzewski. He refused to provide the value of the contract.
Delivery of the first of the planes is expected in the second half of 2008, Chorzewski said. He would not say how many planes were expected at that time.
Chorzewski said the new planes were to replace six Boeing 767s that LOT flies between Europe and America.
"Our company is modernizing and upgrading its fleet," Chorzewski said, adding that the Boeings currently working the routes could remain in service for several more years.
Poland's Gazeta Wyborcza newspaper reported Wednesday that the contract at was valued at US$500 million (euro416 million).
LOT's search for new planes spurred leaders of France, Britain and Germany to send letters to Poland's Prime Minister Marek Belka in February in support of Airbus as it battles Boeing for market share.
Poland's national carrier currently has an all-Boeing fleet of 19 large jets, plus 20 smaller Embraer jets and 13 propeller-driven Aerospatiale-Alenias.
