Boeing's bid to win the Republic of Korea's (RoK's) F-X fighter aircraft competition received a boost last week following US Department of Defense (DoD) approval to export to Seoul the Standoff Land Attack Missile-Expanded Response (SLAM-ER) for Boeing's F-15K aircraft.
Three companies in addition to Boeing are vying for the initial 40-aircraft contract, estimated to be worth up to $4 billion. They are Eurofighter (Typhoon), Dassault Aviation (Rafale Mk2) and Sukhoi (Su-35).
US defence officials said the RoK Ministry of Defence first requested approval to buy 45 SLAM-ER missiles for the F-15K in April as a substitute for the previously approved 45 AGM-154 Joint Standoff Weapons (JSOWs) because they wanted a missile with powered flight.
