Jamie Hunter - Combat Aircraft schrieb:Overseen by the Naval Air Systems Command PMA-265 acquisition office, the award of the $ 1.2-billion five-year System Design and Development (SDD) contract came in December 2003.
The majority of SDD testing was undertaken by two F/A-18Fs that were modified to pre-production EA-18G-configuration (166641/EA1 and 166642/EA2), although initial aeromechanical flight-testing was conducted by VX-23 with two F/A-18Es (165167 and 165779) and a single F-model (165875) from July 2004.
EA1 first flew in August 2006, with an initial delivery to test unit VX-23 at Patuxent River in September, followed by EA2 in November 2007. The latter aircraft then moved to VX-31 at China Lake for subsequent weapons testing.
