IAF hones combat skills during Indo-French exercise

Two French Mirage-2000 fighters "lock-on" their advanced multi-mode radars at two Indian Mirage-2000s from 30 km away. A split second later, the French pilots launch their lethal Beyond Visual Range (BVR) missiles and "kill" one of them.

The other Indian pilot, however, manages to dodge the incoming missiles with frantic counter-measures. He then engages the French fighters in close-in combat and shoots them down with "Mantra Magic-II" heat-seeking missiles. But no, there are no aircraft which come crashing down. Nor do the pilots bail out. It’s all part of the mock aerial battles at the joint Indo-French exercise "Garuda" in Gwalior.

"The French pilots are just like us...It’s only that they have better radars, with greater search distances, and are more experienced in BVR combat...They fire missiles much before they visually see an enemy," says an IAF pilot.

"We are inducting active BVRs in our force only now while the French pilots are relatively poor in close combat or dog-fighting skills," he adds. The French pilots seem to agree. "While the IAF pilots are better trained for visual pick-up, we are trained more for BVR combat. We are learning important lessons from each other," says Franck ‘Terra’ Moly of the French Air Force.

The first-ever air combat exercise with a foreign air force is certainly teaching the IAF a thing or two about achieving air-superiority. One lesson is the increasing importance of BVR combat as opposed to WVR (within visual range) combat in modern warfare.

... und weil wir grad in Indien sind ....

Neben 6 neuen französischen U-Booten ...

India and France are close to finalising a $2 billion deal for the manufacture of six Scorpene submarines.

The Dassault Company has offered to upgrade 130 Mirage 2000-Vs on a technology transfer basis in a deal estimated to be worth $4 billion.

Weisst Du Details, ev. Modernisierung auf den Stand 2000-9?

@Beat

(Quelle: http://www.globalsecurity.org)

Since 1982, when the first major order was placed, the IAF has ordered a total of at least 46 Mirage 2000H and 13 Mirage 2000TH aircraft. All of the IAF's Mirage 2000Hs are slated to receive an avionics upgrade. As of 2002 India was negotiating for the purchase of one squadron (18 aircraft) of Dassault Aviation Mirage 2000D tandem-seat fighter-bombers. This type of aircraft was originally produced for carrying nuclear missiles as part of its minimum nuclear deterrent. India also planned to buy ten additional Mirage 2000TH to replace accident losses and as part of the war reserves. Approval had been granted for the purchase of the additional 10 Mirages, but as of January 2002, no orders have been placed. The IAF has lost at least three or four of the 49 single-seat Mirage 2000s inducted into service in the mid 1980s.

As of March 2002 the IAF reportedly had plans to acquire as many as 126 Mirage 2000-5s to equip seven squadrons. The IAF reportedly wanted 36 Mirage 2000-5s to be delivered in completed form, with the remainder to be assembled by Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) at Bangalore.
