Mr. Borchert:
This letter is in response to your enquiry of September 17, 2001, in which you had questions about the aircraft designation of the CF-18 Hornet.
The correct designation of the Hornet is, in fact, the CF-188. The CF-188A is the single seat version of the aircraft, and the CF-188B is the dual seat version. However, in popular use, the second "8" is omitted and it becomes the CF-18 (CF- 18A and CF-18B are then used to designate the single and dual seat aircraft).
The Directorate of Technical Airworthiness of the Department of National Defence controls the registration numbers of aircraft. If an aircraft already has a designation (in another country's armed forces, for example) the nearest available number is chosen in the Canadian register. In the case of the CF-188 Hornet, the Canadian version of the US-manufactured F-18, CF-18 had already been used many years ago therefore the designation CF-188 was chosen.
I hope this information will help. Your interest in the Canadian Forces is appreciated and if we can help with other matters, we can be reached at (613) 995-2534.
Yours sincerely,
