Das "R" in der Typenbezeichnung steht übrigens für "Refuelling". Ich zitiere mal Roger Lindsay aus der Aeroplane Monthly 1/1978:
"In all, 124 Javelin 7s were eventually converted to FAW.9s, and of this total about 40 bore the designation FAW.9R, the R indicating “Refuelling”. This sub-variant incorporated the necessary “plumbing” to permit in-flight refuelling, achieved with the aid of a probe of gigantic proportions which could be attached to the starboard side of the upper forward fuselage, creating the impression that the aircraft was jousting with a 20-ft lance! The 9R’s other modifications included provision to carry up to four 230-gal long-range auxiliary tanks, pylon-mounted beneath the wings in place of Firestreaks."
