"10th CZECH INTERNATIONAL AIR FEST – CIAF 2003
BRNO – TUØANY INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT 6 – 7 September 2003
Czech International Air Fest 2003 – Recapitulation
CIAF 2003 took place at the Brno-Tuøany International Airport on 6 and 7 September 2003. It was held under the auspices of Chief of the ACR General Staff, Lieutenant-General Pavel Štefka, Stanislav Juránek, Southern Moravia District Administrator, Petr Duchoò, Mayor of the City of Brno.
In the 10th CIAF, which is the biggest air event in the Czech Republic and one of the most important in Europe, 93 aircraft from air forces of 15 nations took part, including the Air Force of the Armed Forces of the Czech Republic. Moreover, leading state administration representatives and businessmen from both the Czech Republic and abroad also took part in the event. Participation of tens of thousands of spectators combined with unique performances of military airmen created an unforgettable atmosphere.
The importance of this unique event was reflected in a massive media support; ÈT (public TV channel) live broadcast scored an audience of 392 000 people; also present were media partners from national newspapers and radio stations, regional press, radio and TV; there was a high-quality promotion, including a poster and an official catalogue. Altogether 278 journalists, both domestic and foreign, were accredited to cover this major event, which has contributed to a positive image of the city of Brno, South Moravia District and the Czech Republic as a whole.
We have been very disappointed and want to apologize to CIAF friends and supporters once more that we were unable to ensure the participation of the Russian Knights (Russkie Vityazi) team in the end. Both we and the staff of the Russian Federation Embassy to the Czech Republic have done our best for the planned visit to take place. We were constantly communicating with the pilots at the Kubinka airfield who were ready to immediately take off. They were even ready to arrive and directly join the programme on Saturday… Unfortunately, problems had arisen that we were unable to deal with. We will off course leave no stone unturned to ensure their participation in the next year.
A big thank goes to all staff of the Brno Airport who have managed the most demanding tasks in providing complex support of the air traffic during CIAF in an excellent manner. During the programme, all planned tourist flights were dispatched, too. The take-offs and landings of large transport aircraft made the event the more interesting and varied for the spectators.
Members of Brno Traffic Police managed the overwhelming flow of cars in a most brilliant manner. Other components of the Police of the Czech Republic, Brno City Police and other components of the Southern Moravian District Integrated Rescue System were also protecting the security of CIAF spectators and visitors. Thank you very much on behalf of all aviation friends.
According to foreign participants, CIAF 2003 has been evaluated very positively not only concerning the organisation; they were particularly pleased by the warm welcome they received in Brno. Most of them want to come back next year.
One of the leading world photographers, Katsushiko Tokunaga, also participated in the 10th CIAF. He is said to be the best air photographer in the world. He came with the Frecce Tricolori and he was taking pictures from second pilot seat in the cockpit during their performance. Undoubtedly we can expect some new publications on world aerobatic teams. Mr. Tokunaga also expressed his interest in coming to CIAF again in the next year.
During the final “hangar-party”, prizes for the best flight performances were handed over:
- Southern Moravia District Administrator Prize for the absolutely best flight demonstration went to Capt. Christial “Louis” van Gestel from the Dutch Royal Air Force on F-16 MLU
- Mayor of the City of Brno Prize for the best demonstration of team flying went to the pilots of the Frecce Tricolori from Italy.
- Czech Air Force Benevolent Fund´s Agency Prize for the best flight demonstration from NATO member countries went to Capt. Brassington, pilot of the CF-18 Hornet
Work on the 11th CIAF 2004, which will take place at the Brno-Tuøany International Airport on 4 and 5 September 2004, has already started and is fully underway. We will keep you informed."

Ob es die Veranstalter 2004 schaffen, die Knights zum CIAF zu holen? Wohl eher kaum! :(
