Book Review: WINGS OF IRAQ, VOLUME 1: THE IRAQI AIR FORCE, 1931-1970
Middle EastAtWar Book Series by Helion & Company 2020
Milos Sipos & Tom Cooper
The Iraqi Air Force remains one of the most interesting air forces and also one of the most combat-experienced of the world. But it is also one of the least known and most misinterpreted air forces in the world.
Established in 1931 the service saw continuous wars against other nations and within the country. The Royal Iraqi Air Force (RIrAF) and later Iraqi Air Force (IrAF) fought against the British empire, local uprisings and coups inside Iraq, fought bitter campaigns against the Kurdish, three wars against Israel, the first Persian Gulf War against Iran, Operation Desert Storm, the Embargo time until the service was completely destroyed in 2003 during Operation Iraqi Freedom.
The book gives an amazing deep view on Iraq’s history as the Cradle of Civilisation since centuries, the influence of the Ottoman Empire, strictly controlled by the British especially in the 1920s - 1950s era and why Iraq operated aircraft of British, US and Soviet design. Did you know that Iraq received a very small batch of 5 F-86F Sabres in 1958 but never flew them! That Iraq was nearly a Mirage III operator after the 1967 war? And why this akquisition never materialized...
The book is subdivided into 8 chapters. Every conflict in the 1931-1970 timeframe is described in incredible detail accompanied with extremely rare photos of aircraft and important persons. Several never seen before in public. As typical for Helion and @War series the book contains several drawings of Bagdad Furies, legendary Hawker Hunter (even a T.Mk 66 trainer variant ) Cold War icons like MiG-17/19/21, Su-7BMK and several transport aircraft of British and Soviet origin.
I really enjoyed reading this book and cannot wait to read Volume 2. Both authors did an incredible job. Years of researching and collecting data on this subject.
Highly recommend!
