DIYARBAKIR, Turkey | Sun Jul 22, 2012 4:05pm EDT
(Reuters) - Four Turkish soldiers were killed and eight were injured on Sunday when their helicopter crashed in southeastern Turkey near the Iraqi border, the military General Staff said.
The S-70 Sikorsky helicopter crashed after it appeared to lose power during a landing in a remote, mountainous area of Hakkari province, it said in a statement on its website.
Clashes have taken place in Hakkari in the past between the Turkish armed forces and the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK). More than 40,000 people have died in the conflict since the PKK took up arms against the state in 1984.

POLITICS - Turkey begins work on ICBMTurkey begins work on ICBM
The Turkish Armed Forces have begun working on a project to develop an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), broadcaster NTV reported on its website today.
A decision to launch the project was made in a July 17 meeting of the Defense Industry Executive Board, headed by Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Chief of General Staff Gen. Necdet Özel. Erdoğan had previously requested that the military develop missiles with a 2,500-kilometer range.
The board decided to form a satellite launch center that would have a two-fold effect on Turkey's aerospace and military endeavors. First, the center will enable Turkey to place its own satellites in orbit, and second, the center will allow the Turkish military to launch missiles that can navigate outside of the Earth's atmosphere. Attaining an ICBM launch capability is reportedly the chief aim of the satellite launch center.
The Turkish Defense Ministry, the Defense Industry Undersecretariat and the Scientific and Research Council of Turkey (TÜBİTAK), have been jointly working on the project for some time.
The report said Ankara could cooperate with an undisclosed Eastern European country to develop the satellite launch center.
The ICBM project, meanwhile, has sought to improve on the SOM cruise missile developed by TÜBİTAK. The SOM cruise missile has a current range of 300 kilometers. The range would first be increased to 1,500 and later to 2,500 kilometers within the project, according to the report.
The report did not elaborate on whether the SOM's planned 2,500-kilometer range would be increased even further or whether its increased range would be utilized to develop an ICBM separately, as missiles with ranges under 5,500 kilometers are not considered "intercontinental."
The countries known to currently have ICBMs in their military arsenal are Russia, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, China and India.

LOCAL - Unmanned air vehicle ANKA fails final testUnmanned air vehicle ANKA fails final test
ANKA, the Turkish Aerospace Industry’s (TAI) unmanned air vehicle, crashed due to a technical problem during its final tests on Sept. 27.
ANKA made its first test flight in December 2010, and has since been used in around 100 sorties. It started its final test flights in September 2012.
According to a statement made by the TAI, during the final test flight on Sept. 27 a breakdown occurred in the prototype vehicle because of a technical failure. “Research to identify the technical failure is ongoing. The final test flights will continue with other UAVs,” the statement said.
TAI test
The TAI has previously tested its ANKA drone and is now preparing an armed version of ANKA for the Turkish military.
Turkey had been planning to launch its unmanned planes this summer, in the hope of using them against the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).

BUSINESS - Turkey postpones order for its first two F-35 fightersTurkey postpones order for its first two F-35 fighters
Turkey said todayit has postponed an order to purchase its first two US-made F-35 fighter jets due to technical problems and rising costs, but said it still intends to buy 100 more in the long run.
"Due to the current state of the JSF (Joint Strike Fighter)...and the rising cost..it was decided to postpone the order placed on Jan 5, 2012 for the two aircraft," the Undersecretariat for Defence Industry (SSM) said in a statement.
The SSM, the public body responsible for Turkey's arms purchases, said the decision was taken because the technical capabilities of the aircraft were "not at the desired level yet." After the initial purchase of the two jets, Turkey plans to order 100 units of the stealth fighter to replace its current fleet consisting mainly of F-4 Phantoms and F-16 Falcons, according to the statement.
Turkey is one of nine countries that are part of a US-led consortium to build the F-35 fighter. The others are Britain, Canada, Italy, the Netherlands, Australia, Norway and Denmark.
The development of the stealth fighter has been plagued by technical problems that have prompted some countries to cancel, scale back or defer purchases.
