[ Quelle ]Sweden’s new vision
By Craig Hoyle in Gothenburg, Linköping, Malmen and Såtena
The continuing transformation of Sweden’s armed forces from a Cold War posture of national defence to an organisation capable of meaningful participation in international operations is to take clearer shape following national elections in mid-September, with the scope of new procurements, legacy equipment upgrades and strike aircraft cuts to be determined by the results.
Sweden’s role as the dominant player in the four-nation Nordic Battle Group is at the forefront of its planning activities, with the 2,400-strong unit to be available to lead a potential European Union peacekeeping mission for a six-month period from January 2008. This requirement is driving Stockholm – which will supply 2,000 of the group’s deployable personnel – to give serious consideration to acquiring strategic airlifters and roll-on, roll-off sealift capacity in time to support its EU commitment.

[ Quelle ]Red Flag to test Swedes
The Swedish air force is to conduct its first major overseas deployment of the Saab JAS39C/D Gripen fighter in early July, with seven of its aircraft to be flown to the USA to participate in the inaugural Red Flag Alaska exercise.
Five single-seat Gripen Cs and two two-seat Ds will depart Ronneby airbase in Sweden on 13 July for an approximately 5,500nm (10,200km) outbound deployment to be conducted without in-flight refuelling and divided into eight legs. To be accompanied by two Lockheed Martin C-130H transports, the aircraft and 12 pilots are scheduled to arrive at Eilson AFB, Alaska on 17 July, one week before the start of Red Flag flying activities, which will conclude on 4 August.

[ Quelle ]Upgrade to improve Argus
Sweden’s Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) is close to signing a contract with Ericsson Microwave Systems and Saab for an extensive upgrade to two of the Swedish air force’s S100B Argus airborne early-warning (AEW) aircraft. To bring the aircraft to a new airborne surveillance and control system configuration intended to support international operations, the work is expected to include the addition of three onboard operator stations and enhancements to the modified Saab 340’s Erieye surveillance radar, say industry and military sources.

The air force currently has six Argus platforms, with their Erieye radars, used to relay AEW data to ground stations for exploitation. The service intends to equip two of its aircraft with onboard operator stations, identification friend-or-foe systems, Link 16 datalinks and Have Quick digital radios to support future international commitments, says Brig Gen Anders Silwer, air component commander for the Swedish-led Nordic Battle Group. The proposed upgrade will result in the availability of NATO-compatible aircraft with similarties to the Erieye-based Embraer EMB-145 AEW previously sold to Greece, say industry sources.
The FMV says negotiations have yet to conclude on the Argus upgrade, but Silwer says the two upgraded aircraft should be delivered from 2009.
