Bert Kinzey schrieb:Cdr. Henry Kleemann, the squadron commander, was assigned to aircraft 101 as is the usual case with squadron commanders. (Numbers ending in 00 are reserved for the Commander of the Air Group). Cdr Kleemann's NFO was Lt.Dave Venlet.
The other crew, Lt.Larry Muczynski and Lt.Jim Anderson, were assigned to aircraft 112.
However, crews rarely fly their own aircraft , and during the engagement, Cdr.Kleemann flew 102 which was assigned to VF-41's XO, Cdr.Mike Field and his NFO, Lt.Steve Walker.
The BuNo of this aircraft was 160403.
Lt.Muczynski and Lt.Anderson were in 107, BuNo. 160390. and according to VF-41'S corrosion control people, there is no record of any crew names being on the aircraft at the time of the engagement.
After the engagement, the number on 160403 was changed in 101, thus making it the commanders aircraft. Cdr.Kleemann's name and that of Lt.Venlet's was painted on the canopy rails. The number of 160390 was left as 107, but Lt.Muczynski's and Lt.Anderson;s names were added to the canopy rails, but only last names were used. Kill markings were originally added to both aircraft under the canopy rails on the left side, but this was later changed to a position under the spade on outer sides of both vertical tails.
