Flight tests of the Eurofighter Typhoon strike aircraft are expected to resume around 9 December, after an investigation into the 21 November crash of one of the programme's development aircraft in Spain determined that the incident occurred under unique circumstances.
Two industry sources close to the programme told JDW that a Spanish board of inquiry report into the event concluded that the aircraft lost power after an unexpected power surge affected both EJ200 engines. The aircraft crashed after its two-man crew ejected, having failed to restart the engines. The powerplants installed aboard the aircraft at the time of the accident were two of just three from an early production standard within the Eurofighter test programme, said the industry sources. As such, no possibility exists that an identical twin-engine failure could occur, and there is accordingly "no safety issue with the aircraft", said one official.
NATO's Eurofighter and Tornado Management Agency was expected to clear the surviving Typhoon fleet for operations as JDW went to press on 6 December, removing the temporary flight suspension observed in the wake of the Spanish accident. As the agency had not imposed an official grounding order on the fleet, a resumption of flight operations will require no further approval.
A formal declaration of the type's acceptance for service across the project's four partner countries is now anticipated after the last of these - Spain - accepts its first production aircraft next March.
