Two killed as MiG-21 crashes in Srinagar
Srinagar, July 15: In the second mishap in a week, an Indian Air
Force MiG 21 fighter jet crashed in Srinagar on Tuesday night killing both the pilot and the co-pilot.
A defence spokesman said the MiG 21 trainer aircraft was on a routine sortie when it crashed while landing in the IAF technical airfield area, some 10 km from Srinagar, at around 10.30 p.m.
Wing Commander R Rastogi and co-pilot Flt. Lt. Ganesh were killed in the crash, Lt. Col. Mukhtiar Singh said adding there were no civilian casualties on the ground.
On July 7, a MiG 23 crashed in the paddy fields near village
Mahianwala Kalan in Ferozepur district of Punjab with the pilot ejecting out safely.
Dubbed as "flying coffins", the MiGs, earliest to be inducted into
the IAF, have been involved in a spate of accidents.
Since the advent of this year, the IAF has lost six fighters planes -- three MiG 21s, two MiG 23s and a Jaguar.
