"British, Swedish alone in Czech fighter tender
PRAGUE, May 24 (Reuters) - A British-Swedish aerospace and defence consortium remains the only bidder in a Czech government tender to supply fighter planes after four western groups withdrew, the Defence Ministry said on Thursday.
The tender for 24 or 36 western-made supersonic fighters, worth an estimated $2.5 billion, has been dogged for months by criticism of its complicated and expensive procedures and by rumours of heavy commercial and political lobbying.
A consortium of Britain's BAE Systems Plc (LSE: BA.L - news) and Sweden's Saab , makers of the Jas-39 Gripen fighters, has long been tipped as the favourite and is now alone in the race after two European and two U.S. groups pulled out.
Czech Defence Ministry spokesman Milan Repka said that Boeing Co and Lockheed Martin Corp , quit the race for the largest ever Czech defence purchase after agreeing with the United States government to do so.
A Financial Times report said that the U.S. government had barred the two from competing in the tender because conditions in the tender process made it impossible for U.S. companies to compete on an equal basis with their European counterparts.
But European groups EADS , part of the Eurofighter consortium, and Dassault Aviation , which produces Mirage jets, also quit the highly disputed tender, Repka said.
He declined to give any details, saying the bidders had asked the ministry not to disclose why they were withdrawing.
"I can confirm the ministry of defence got a letter from the U.S. government saying it will not participate in the tender for supersonic multirole aircraft for the Czech Air Force," Repka told Reuters. "Eurofighter and Mirage are out as well."
TOUGH ON U.S.
The tender has long been a source of major disputes, and the cash-strapped government has said it may even end up not choosing any supplier due to budget constraints. The fighters would replace an ageing fleet of Soviet-made MiG-21 fighters.
Repka said that the government had demanded tender documentation and bids be submitted in the Czech language and made in Czech crowns.
According to British magazine Jane's Defence Weekly, a U.S. government source said last month that this made participation difficult for U.S. companies and Czech Prime Minister Milos Zeman was quoted in the local press late last year as hinting the U.S. may not be successful in the tender.
Repka said the tender had not been halted due to a lack of bidders and bids are due in on May 31.
"The tender continues and any potential modifications must be approved by the government," Repka said. "
