"Saratov Aircraft Builders Sign Agreement with American Company on Creation of New Generation Airplane
Saratov aircraft builders and representatives of the American NAVAIR company which provides logistical support to the U.S. Navy signed a protocol of cooperation on Thursday.
The director of the structures department of the NAVAIR company, John Fisher, and the general director of the Saratov aircraft plant, Aleksandr Ermishin, placed the signatures beneath the agreement.
According to Ermishin, the sides intend to cooperate within the framework of a project for the creation of a new generation amphibian aircraft ("flying saucer,” “EhKIP,” Ecology and Progress.) In accordance with the agreement, the Saratov aviation plant is the lead assemble, tester and flight research center for the project.
John Fisher for his part called the visit to Saratov the start of a long and mutually beneficial relationship between the Saratov enterprise and the American company, which should become part of a cooperative program between Russia and the U.S.
The family of amphibious "EhKIP" aircraft which do not need airfields was created in Samara under the leadership of the aircraft designer Lev Nikolayevich Shchukin. The aerodynamic principles of a flying saucer are used in the vehicle, which has a payload capacity from 2.5 to 600 tonnes, and the fuselage has taken on the role of the wings. Instead of landing there is an air cushion: The “EhKIP” will land and take off both at an airfield and from a swamp. The flight altitude is from 3 meters to 10,000 meters."
