The French government announced on 3 March that it had selected the Airbus Helicopters H160 as the "basis" for its Hélicoptère Interarmées Léger (HIL) programme.
French Minster of Defence Jean-Yves Le Drian made the announcement during a visit to the company's manufacturing and testing facility at Marignane, near Marseilles in southern France.
According to Le Drian, the government is to procure between 160 and 190 aircraft through the HIL programme, with deliveries to begin in 2024 - representing an advancement on the programme's initially envisaged delivery date of 2028.
The HIL programme is expected to replace a number of ageing helicopters in the French military's fleet, allowing the military to operate a single platform in many roles.
An Airbus spokesperson told Jane's that the helicopter's construction is to represent the new production method for the manufacturer, with its fuselage to be manufactured at the company's facility in Donauwörth in Germany, tail booms in Spain, and avionics and other dynamic components - such as gearboxes and rotorblades - at sites throughout France, including Paris and Marignane. Final assembly of the helicopters is to take place at Marignane.
