http://home.iae.nl/users/wbergmns/info/su25.htm:
"... Poor combat performance of the Su-25 in Afghanistan led to a much improved 'Frogfoot', named the Su-39 ..."
"... his main hiatuses: limited survivability, lack of all-weather capacity, insufficient action radius and avionics limits..."
http://www.aerospaceweb.org/aircraft/attack/su25/:
"..the Su-25 has proven very unpopular with pilots. This was especially true during its use in the Afghanistan conflict where the Su-25 suffered terrible losses due to hand-held anti-aircraft missiles and ground fire. Because of experience in that war, an improved version, known as the Su-39, has been developed ..."
About 40 Su-25 were deployed in Afghanistan. The total of 61,600 hrs of operational flying time were accumulated."
(noch weitere Daten und Episoden aus A.)
und
http://www.vectorsite.net/avsu25.html :
"...The Su-25 was also sometimes fitted with cannon pods containing a twin-barrelled NR-23 23 millimeter cannon, with 260 rounds per pod and the ability to pivot the cannon 30 degrees down from the aircraft centerline. The pod could be mounted backwards to provide covering fire as the Su-25 left the target area, since otherwise the Mujahideen tended to pop up out of hiding and fire on it from the rear. Reports indicate that the cannon pods were often mounted with one firing forward and another firing backward..."
"... A total of 23 Su-25s were lost in air combat in Afghanistan, with a number destroyed on the ground as well. One of the 23 was shot down by a Pakistani F-16 fighter while pursuing Mujahideen fighters across the Pakstani border..." (letztere war die von Ruhzkoj)
"... The Grach could generally shrug off cannon fire and the pilot enjoyed a high degree of protection in his titanium bathtub, but when the Mujahideen began to use US-supplied "Redeye" and then "Stinger" shoulder-launched surface to air missiles, losses mounted.
The major problem was that the twin engines of the Su-25 were too close together ..."
