SCOTTY Secures Video and Data Communication on Helicopters
Eurocopter flight trials with integrated satcom equipment from SCOTTY and EMS SATCOM prove
successful.
Graz (Austria), September 12, 2005: SCOTTY is proud to announce that the prototype phase of the
development of its Aero Mission Gear has been successfully completed with Eurocopter’s
confirmation of the positive results of official flight trials.
The communication solution onboard the German Army CH-53G helicopter is a joint project with
Eurocopter as systems integrator, with SCOTTY as provider of the video and data communication
equipment with full development responsibility, and with EMS SATCOM as supplier of the satellite
communication equipment.
The project was initiated by SCOTTY in order to offer to the German Army a reliable
communication and connection package for its helicopters to facilitate their standard
reconnaissance flight missions.
Challenging tasks had to be fulfilled in order to deliver a powerful high quality system to meet the
customer’s requirements:
EMS SATCOM customised a radome for the tracking antenna that is designed to maintain total
functionality and while also allowing the tail rotors to be folded. The EMS SATCOM eNfusion HSD
(high-speed data) terminal, a part of the kit, enables a combined connection for video, data, and
voice of up to 256 kbps, using Inmarsat’s Swift64 service.
SCOTTY designed the communications network onboard the CH-53G, delivering TEMPEST video
and data conferencing hardware, securing interoperability with the encryption environment,
integrating everything together in an aero-certified rack which can be rolled on and off the
helicopter. It is the only system worldwide that can be rapidly moved from one aircraft to another,
securing reconnaissance flight readiness with less than one hour’s installation time.
Eurocopter was responsible for the successful integration of the hardware into the aircraft.
The complete solution was demonstrated to officials from the German Army a week ago. In an
impressive flight trial, the system proved its reliability in maintaining connectivity in all essential
flight manoeuvres to follow terrain including s-curves and turns with high bank angles.
SCOTTY, EMS SATCOM and Eurocopter are not only pleased to have received the customer’s
approval, but also because they have been able to realize this comprehensive communication
solution in a very short time-frame.
The project now enters its final phase in which the procurement process will be started and
delivery implemented.
