The FBW computers are US-built: Lear Astronics (Santa Monica, CA) supplied the units fitted to early aircraft, but Saab later switched to a unit by BAE Systems (Bristol, UK). The system has 14 backup levels in case of physical damage. If the Gripen loses its ailerons on one side, the airplane can make it home with the aid of differential canard movements. If the entire digital FCS crashes, the Gripen can fly home with free-floating canards and an analog back-up system.

Delta canard’s inherent good aerodynamics are:
· Stable detached leading edge vortex flow, high maximum lift coefficient.
· Positive trim lift on all lifting surfaces.
· Floating canard offers stable aircraft if EFCS fails.
· Good field performance (take off and landing), enhanced by special aerodynamic breaking mode.
