One dead as Turkish military helicopter crashes

One Turkish captain died in a military helicopter crash in southern province of Malatya on Thursday, while another captain heavily injured.


Captain Erhan Kındız was killed when a military helicopter crashed in Malatya due to a technical problem, the state-run Anatolia news agency reported.

Initially, Kındız was heavily injured and was hospitalized at İnönü Univeristy Turgut Özal Medical Center but he could not be saved.

The situation of another injured captain Kamuran Sönmezay, whose treatment also continues at the same hospital, remains life-critical.

Pilot killed in helicopter crash

A Cobra gunship from the Malatya 2nd Army Command crashed during a training flight due to a technical malfunction near a landing zone in Malatya.

Pilot Capt. Erhan Kındar died in hospital due his injuries and pilot Capt. Kamuran Sönmezay was hospitalized with a broken spine.

Turkey plans to buy U.S. heavy lift helicopters

In an effort to boost its army's air transport capabilities, Turkey has formally requested the purchase of 10 U.S.-made CH-47 Chinook heavy lift helicopters worth nearly $500 million, according to procurement officials.

Turkey has signed a government-to-government deal with the United States to buy six Boeing-made CH-47 heavy-lift military transport helicopters, the first such weapons in its inventory, a senior procurement official said over the weekend.

The deal is worth up to $400 million, the official said.
The Defense Security Cooperation Agency, or DSCA, the Pentagon’s body coordinating weapons sales, notified the U.S. Congress of a potential sale of a total of 14 CH-47F heavy-lift helicopters for $1.2 billion in December 2009. Congress gave permission for the sale later that month.

Because of financial constraints, however, the Undersecretariat for the Defense Industry, or SSM, Turkey’s procurement agency, later wanted to buy only six CH-47Fs, five for the Army and one for the Special Forces Command, leaving a decision on the remaining eight platforms for the future. Contract negotiations between the SSM, the U.S. government and Boeing were launched last year.

“The contract was signed in late July,” the procurement official told the Hürriyet Daily News. “After the helicopters begin to arrive, we plan to make some modifications to them according to our needs.”

The six CH-47F Chinooks will be the first heavy-lift helicopters in the Turkish Army’s inventory. Their deliveries are expected to begin in 2013 and end in 2014.

Three injured in military helicopter crash in SE Turkey
Three personnel were injured when a military helicopter crashed due to a technical malfunction in Turkey's southeastern Mardin province on Monday.
The injured were taken to Diyarbakır Military Hospital. One was reported to be in critical condition.
The crew on board were returning from leaving a delegate at the Mardin Regiment Command to Mardin's Ömerli district when the helicopter crashed.
A team was reportedly working on the crash site to determine the cause of the accident.

Turkey to purchase two F-35 fighter jets from US
Turkey on Thursday announced that it will purchase two F-35 fighter jets from the US, which will be delivered to Turkey in 2015.

The Defense Industry Implementation Committee (SSİK), which convened on Thursday at the building of the Undersecretariat for Defense Industry in Ankara, authorized the Defense Ministry Undersecretariat to order the purchase of two F-35 fighter jets to meet the Turkish Armed Forces' (TSK) need for new generation fighter jets.
The committee said it will also start contract talks with Bell Helicopter Textron for the purchase of 15 helicopters for the country's police force.

Türkisches Kampfflugzeug über der Ägäis vermisst

Ankara - Die türkische Luftwaffe vermisst nach eigenen Angaben ein mit zwei Piloten besetztes Kampfflugzeug vom Typ T-37C. Die Maschine habe sich am Montag auf einem Übungsflug über der Ägäis befunden, teilte die Luftwaffe auf ihrer Webseite mit. Hubschrauber, Flugzeuge und Schiffe der Marine seien bereits auf der Suche nach dem Jet. Im vergangenen Jahr waren zwei Piloten ums Leben gekommen, als eine T-37C nahe der Stadt Urla an der Ägäisküste abgestürzt war.

An F-5 jet crashed in the central Anatolian province of Konya during a military training session on Tuesday.
The jet reportedly crashed near a factory of the Turkish Engine Industry and Trade Corporation (TÜMOSAN). Firefighting teams and ambulances were dispatched to the area. One of the pilots died and the other is missing, initial reports said.

Turkey plans to manufacture its own warplanes at home

Turkey set out long-term plans to produce its own warplanes last week, following commitments made at a meeting of the Defense Industry Executive Committee (SSİK) last year.
The project, which is set to be completed by 2023, is currently in the initial phases. A budget of $20 billion has been allocated for developing the conceptual design of the fighter jets, sources from the defense industry have said.

Feasibility studies are currently under way and will examine the cost of producing Turkey’s first domestically produced fighter planes, the technology to be used, developments in the international defense markets and the challenges of developing a new warplane from scratch. SAAB, the world-renowned aerospace and defense company that produces the widely operated JAS 39 fighter jets, will be assisting the project during the design phases.

The Turkish Air Force (THK) currently maintains a fleet of F-4 and F-16 fighter jets. These aircraft will be replaced by US-produced F-35s in the upcoming years, of which Turkey is planning to buy 100, at a total cost of $16 billion. The first two F-35s have already been ordered. However, the Pentagon refuses to release the source code of the plane’s software, which has raised concerns in Ankara.

The pentagon’s refusal to provide the source code of the F-35’s onboard computer software is the main motivation behind Turkey deciding to produce its own fighter jets. Currently, only a few countries -- the United States, Russia, the United Kingdom, France and Germany -- are producing military aircraft.

Turkish warplanes hit Northern Iraq

Turkish warplanes launched a wave of air strikes on northern Iraq late yesterday, where they often target bases of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), but there were no reports of casualties, witnesses and border guards said today.

"After 10:00 last night, the Turkish warplanes hit some areas near the border in three locations," said Col. Hussein Tamr, commander of border guards in Dahuk province, part of Iraq's northern autonomous Kurdish region.

"It lasted more than an hour. We went there after the attacks finished. We found no casualties and no material damage because the attacks took place on the outskirts of these villages," he added.

Witnesses reached by telephone in the border villages confirmed the strikes and said there were no reports of casualties.

The PKK is listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the United States and the European Union.

Deadly Turkish army helicopter crash in Afghanistan

A Turkish army Sikorsky helicopter has fallen on a house in the Afghan capital Kabul, killing at least 12 Turkish soldiers and two children.

It crashed into a house in the suburb of Bagrami while on a peacekeeping mission, the Turkish military said.

The cause of the crash has not been established, it added, and a Nato official said there were no reports of insurgent activity.
